Integrated Router

For efficient IP networking and transport over satellite, the CDM-800 features integrated routing capability with very low overhead encapsulation, header compression, payload compression and Advanced Quality of Service. The advanced QoS combined with header and payload compression ensures the highest quality of service with minimal jitter and latency for real-time traffic, priority treatment of mission critical applications and maximum bandwidth efficiency.

Header Compression
The CDM-800 supports industry-leading header compression for IP traffic on a per route basis. Header compression can reduce the 40 byte IP/UDP/RTP header to as little as 1 byte. For TCP/IP, the 40 byte header is reduced to as little as 3 bytes. For applications such as VoIP, header compression can provide bandwidth savings exceeding 60%. E.g. 8 kbps G.729 voice codec requires 24 kbps of IP bandwidth once encapsulated into an IP/UDP/RTP datagram. With header compression, the same voice call needs about 8.5 kbps – a saving of almost 65%. Bandwidth requirements for typical Web/HTTP traffic can also be reduced by 10% or more with TCP/IP header compression.

Lossless Payload Compression
The CDM-800 supports industry-leading 2nd generation lossless payload compression for IP traffic on a per route basis. Implemented in the hardware for maximum throughput and efficiency, payload compression can reduce the required satellite bandwidth by as much as 40-60%.

Low Overhead Encapsulation
The CDM-800 supports low overhead Enhanced Generic Stream Encapsulation (GSE) for transmit. Enhanced GSE is typically 20-30% more efficient compared to GSE and 70-80% more efficient compared to Multi Protocol Encapsulation (MPE).

Advanced Quality of Service (QoS)
The CDM-800 supports multi-level QoS to ensure the highest quality service with minimal jitter and latency for real-time traffic, priority treatment of mission critical applications and maximum bandwidth efficiency. Supported modes are:

  • DiffServ – Industry-standard method of providing QoS enabling seamless co-existence in networks that implement DiffServ
  • Max/Priority – Provides multi-level traffic prioritization with the ability to limit maximum traffic per priority class
  • Min/Max – Provides a Committed Information Rate (CIR) to each user defined class of traffic with the ability to allow a higher burstable rate depending on availability

DVB-S2 Forward Error Correction

The CDM-800 supports DVB-S2 for the shared outbound TDM transmission. DVB-S2 is the second-generation transmission specification for satellite broadcasting developed by the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project. It benefits from latest advancements in modulation and channel coding. Combing the Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes with QPSK, 8-PSK, 16-APSK and 32-APSK modulation, DVB-S2 provides almost 30% capacity increase over DVB-S in Constant Coding and Modulation (CCM) mode.

In addition to the CCM mode of operation, DVB-S2 also supports Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) and Variable Coding and Modulation (VCM) modes of operation for maximizing transmission efficiency.

Adaptive Modulation & Coding (ACM) Capable
Satellite users have traditionally relied on worst case link margin to overcome rain fade and other impairments which leads to significant inefficiencies. ACM converts the available link margin into increased throughput – gain of 100% or more is possible. ACM maximizes throughput under all conditions – rain fade, inclined orbit satellite operation, antenna mispointing, noise, interference and other impairments.

Variable Coding & Modulation (VCM) Capable
With a shared TDM, the traditional approach has been to size the TDM according to the most disadvantaged remote. VCM now allows operators to define groups of remotes that can have different modulation and coding depending on their receive conditions – disadvantaged location, lower G/T etc, thereby maximizing the efficiency of the shared TDM. VCM can also be used to provide different levels of error protection to different services.

G.703 Clock Extension

Cellular networks require precise synchronization of base stations, which is a challenge when using IP backhaul. Most operators are forced to use GPS-based external equipment for site synchronization. CDM-800 can receive a high stability E1 signal as reference and propagates it to the remotes. This process does not require additional bandwidth.


The modem can be managed via the web-based user interface or SNMP.
